When the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute (WVCI) set out to remodel its pharmacy within the PeaceHealth RiverBend Annex, precision and compliance were paramount to the project. Partnering with GMA Architects, we provided comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services, ensuring every system met the strict environmental and safety standards of a modern compounding pharmacy.

The remodel called for a highly technical upgrade of the HVAC and control systems to maintain critical pressure differentials and air cleanliness between rooms. Systems West’s design team integrated Critical Room Control (CRC) systems for precise pressure monitoring and balancing, ensuring a stable and contamination-free environment.

Smart Systems, Seamless Integration

Building on the foundation of the existing infrastructure, the team modernized the space without a full system replacement, tying new HVAC components and controls into the existing building automation system.

New LED lighting with dimming controls improved both efficiency and visual comfort, while UV lights integrated into the ductwork and rooms provided added air purification, an innovative measure that enhances occupant safety and system hygiene.

To support pharmaceutical operations, the team modified the wet-pipe fire suppression system with cleanable recessed heads and introduced new security access control and surveillance infrastructure.

Overcoming Technical Challenges

During commissioning, the team faced an unexpected challenge when the internal controls of the reused terminal units created airflow imbalances. Through close collaboration between Systems West’s design and commissioning teams, Siemens controls specialists, and GMA Architects, the root cause was diagnosed and resolved by replacing the terminal unit controllers. The process showcased the team’s persistence, deep technical knowledge, and commitment to delivering reliable performance for critical environments.
