Mt. Hood Community College Retractable Dome

Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) is transforming its iconic 50-meter outdoor pool into a year-round asset through the addition of a retractable dome, expanding access for students, athletes, and the broader community. Systems West Engineers is providing mechanical and electrical engineering in close coordination with the broader design team to ensure the facility performs reliably in all seasons. Our role focuses on integrating building systems that support comfort, safety, and efficient operations without compromising the outdoor experience that makes the pool so special. This approach allows Mt. Hood to maximize the use of an existing, highly valued campus resource.

Designing MEP systems for a large retractable structure presents unique challenges, including managing humidity and air quality, as well as coordinating power, lighting, and life-safety systems that must adapt to both open-air and enclosed conditions. Our team brings deep experience in aquatic facilities and complex system coordination, helping MHCC navigate these challenges with confidence. We prioritize solutions that are durable, energy-conscious, and practical for long-term maintenance. The result is a design that supports year-round programming while respecting the College’s budget and operational goals.

Equally important to the College is a smooth delivery process, and we pride ourselves on clear communication and collaborative problem-solving. By working closely with campus stakeholders and other consultants, we help keep the project aligned with the schedule and permitting requirements. This partnership-driven approach reduces risk and supports informed decision-making throughout design and construction. As the retractable dome project progresses through construction, our focus remains on delivering dependable systems that enable Mt. Hood Community College to serve its community for decades to come.
